Dignity is an interaction budget too

Experience design is the study of what a person feels entitled to: clarity, a fair exit, a mistake that is not turned into a lecture.

A tip that blames the network when the service is throttling the client trains cynicism. A skip button hidden behind a long press teaches players that the game is embarrassed by its own movie. Dignity is the accumulation of not doing those small insults, even if each one passes A/B in isolation.

When you write error copy, read it out loud in a flat voice, then a tired voice, then a worried voice. If it sounds like it is scolding a child, rewrite until it sounds like a careful engineer: short, unglamorous, and fair.
